200-year-old Schaefferstown Home Moved to Avoid Demolition

Two hundred year old two story schaefferstown home moving onto new foundation.

SCHAEFFERSTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) –

People lined up to watch in awe as a Lebanon County home was lifted from its foundation Wednesday and moved from the place where it has stood for the last 200 years.

“I’m excited to see something like this,” Daniel Wine said. “It’s not something you see every day.”

PennDOT has plans for the corner where Routes 897, 419, and 501 meet. To avoid demolition, the home owned by the Dierwech sisters had to be moved out of the way.

It took about 30 minutes to move the 120-ton house about 300 feet to the back of the property. Planning and logistics took much longer, about three years according to Wolfe House and Building Movers of New Bernville.

It will take a few days to hook up utilities before the sisters can move back in.
