For many commercial property owners, running out of usable space creates a difficult decision. They can build an addition, relocate to a larger facility, or find a way to make better use of the building they already have. In many cases, roof lifting and roof raising offer a practical alternative that increases capacity without the expense and disruption of new construction.
Warehouses, manufacturing plants, distribution centers, and industrial facilities often have plenty of floor space but insufficient vertical clearance. As business equipment grows larger and storage systems become taller, low ceilings can limit productivity and reduce the efficiency of day-to-day operations. Raising the roof can solve those challenges while allowing a business to remain in its existing location.
Wolfe House Movers’ Recent Project Shows How Roof Raising Improves Functionality
A recent project we completed demonstrates how effective this approach can be. In July 2025, Wolfe House Movers completed a commercial roof lift on a steel-frame warehouse in Afton, Texas. The facility measured approximately 120 feet by 1,050 feet, and the owner needed an additional 2 feet 4 inches of interior clearance to accommodate operational requirements.
Rather than demolishing part of the building or constructing an addition, the project team developed a lifting plan that increased the building’s height while preserving the existing structure. The roof and supporting columns were lifted in three sections, allowing the facility to gain the needed clearance without significant interruption to the building’s footprint.
Projects like this highlight one of the biggest advantages of roof elevation work: it allows owners to unlock unused cubic volume inside a building. For this one it added 2 feet and four inches to the previous height, giving the business additional vertical space needed for storage systems, larger equipment, automated operations, or future expansion. Even this relatively modest increase in roof height can make a substantial difference in how the building functions.
Maximizing Your Business Investment
The financial benefits of lifting your warehouse roof can also be significant. Constructing a new building often involves land acquisition, permitting, utility work, and lengthy construction schedules. Expanding outward may trigger zoning reviews, site plan approvals, and increased property development costs. By comparison, raising an existing roof allows business owners to maximize the investment they’ve already made in their property while minimizing demolition waste and construction materials.
Roof lifting can also reduce operational disruption. Businesses frequently cannot afford extended shutdowns while a new facility is built. Roof lifts can often be completed in a shorter timeline than a major expansion project. At the Afton warehouse, we coordinated the work around an accelerated schedule, completing the lift efficiently while providing the additional headroom the client needed. In the Afton warehouse project, we coordinated its work around an accelerated schedule, and completed the lift efficiently while providing the required headroom for the client.
Wolfe House Movers Use Special Structural Jacking Equipment for Roof Lifting
Of course, raising a commercial roof is far more complex than simply lifting it into the air. The process begins with engineering and structural analysis to determine how the building will behave during the lift. Everything is evaluated before any lifting takes place, including materials and equipment.
Once the engineering phase is complete, specialized jacking towers are installed around the building. Placed adjacent to existing structural columns, they are also attached to both the floor and roof framing. Hydraulic lifting equipment is then connected through a unified control system that allows every lifting point to lift at precisely the same rate. This synchronized movement is critical because even small differences in lifting speed can introduce twisting forces that place unnecessary stress on the structure.
Wolfe House & Building Movers utilizes the Buckingham Unified Hydraulic Jacking System along with our SmartJack™ controls to coordinate multiple jacks simultaneously. The system continuously unifies lifting operations, helping maintain uniform movement regardless of weight variations throughout the roof structure. This level of control is particularly important when working with large industrial buildings where the roof may span hundreds of feet.
This design provides two important advantages. First, it allows crews to safely support substantial structural loads while work progresses. Second, the modular extension system enables controlled lifting over significant distances without repeatedly dismantling and rebuilding support systems. For large commercial buildings, that efficiency can translate directly into reduced project timelines and improved jobsite safety.
In the Afton warehouse project, we installed and braced 30 jacking towers around the perimeter of the structure. After the new stub columns were installed, we lowered the roof onto its permanent supports once the new structural components were in place. The result was a warehouse with greater interior clearance and expanded operational capacity, all while retaining the existing building footprint.
Raise Your Commercial Building Roof with Wolfe House & Building Movers
For many warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and industrial buildings, raising the roof can be a more economical solution than constructing a new addition or moving operations to a larger location. Wolfe House & Building Movers has spent decades performing these types of projects, giving building owners confidence that their facilities are in capable hands. And with our ability to serve commercial clients across much of the United States, we have become a trusted partner for businesses looking to modernize and expand their facilities while maximizing the value of their current property.
When properly engineered and executed, roof lifting can transform an outdated facility into a more productive and valuable asset. Roof raising provides a practical way to create more usable space while preserving the investment already made in the building. The success of our projects like that at Afton demonstrates how the right combination of engineering, specialized equipment, and experienced crews can help commercial property owners adapt existing facilities to meet changing business needs.
