Development plans for the courthouse grounds in Fincastle, Virginia required moving a 120-year-old granite monument to accommodate construction of a new courthouse. Recognizing the monument as a significant historic feature of the property, the town chose to preserve it by hiring Wolfe House & Building Movers to relocate it to a new location on the grounds.

Wolfe engineered a lifting and transport plan for the monument, which stood 25 feet tall with a 6’x6’ granite base. After installing a support framework of steel beams and stands, Wolfe lifted the 24,251-lb monument from its original foundation using a unified hydraulic jacking system. The team positioned Buckingham dollies under the beams and transported the monument 500 feet along a prepared route between the existing buildings. At the new site, Wolfe pulled alongside the new pedestal and slid the monument into position on it.
